If beauty is relief from monotony, as my art teacher Dorothy Ives used to tell me, then I’ve found true beauty in many arid landscapes, just as I did today southwest of Ajo, Arizona:
“The desert itself is a place that can be refreshingly delicious, comforting, and nourishing as long as you find ways to stay hydrated and shaded. It is a place where sound travels like nowhere else on earth. It is a place that can suddenly become luminous because of the particular optical qualities of its wondrously glorious light. It indeed a bright and shining place, not a dull or monotonous one.”
