Growing up in the desert around the Yoemem village of Guadalupe, Yaqui historian, cultural educator and human rights activist Octaviana Trujillo learned these lessons that she shares with us in our new University of Arizona Press anthology:
“Our ceremonies are dependent upon our access to & care for so many desert plants & animals. They have become vital elements in our culture, & so our ancient traditions live on until this day. The desert still gives us everything: food, drink, medicine, shelter & protection, & ultimately the distinctiveness of our culture.”
