Daily Reflection: What if we measured our society’s awesomeness not by its penchant for growth, but by its generosity in returning resources to the earth

Gary-Paul-Nabhan-1-85x85What if we measured our society’s awesomeness not by its penchant for growth and its efficiency in extracting resources from the earth, but by its generosity in returning resources to the earth, to decompose and offer more fertility to the soil?

Instead of Gross National Product, we should be using as a benchmark the amount of Delicate Mycorrhizal Detritus we generate or transform! Even though we’ve never had a presidential candidate run on a platform that promises more decomposition than productivity, we could use a little more fragrant and flourishing fungi than strip mines and landfills!

We’re so repulsed by decomposition that we hardly teach our children that “life cycles” also include death, decay and renewal along the way…
