Again, from Desert Legends, written more than two decades ago: “I have joined the ranks of a motley crew of field scientists [read earthly spirits] who dance to the tune called ecological restoration. The band both works and plays at reintroducing endangered plants and animals to habitats where they formerly occurred, and attempts to recovery the vibrancy that those habitats once had. It is as much an art as a science, for it allows us to improvise, to listen to the land, and to intuit where the harmonics of a natural community are going, as well as where they have been. We sing over the wounds left on this earth, and attempt to heal them.”
